NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league’s World Cup of Hockey is still a work in progress, but has been in discussions with the NHL Player’s Association and the International Ice Hockey Federation about its future.
Earlier this year, the NHL confirmed plans for the World Cup’s return for the first time since 2016 in Toronto.
Discussions still remain about the tournament taking place in either February as intended by the league, or in the fall. Commissioner Gary Bettman added that they hope to have a stable plan in place to make this a recurring event.
The last World Cup of Hockey featured six countries and two all-star teams, North America U-23 and Europe. Those two will not return, with the NHL electing to go back to a traditional international tournament format like they last did in 2004.
The NHL hasn’t participated in a best-on-best showing since the last World Cup of Hockey, electing to miss the past two Olympic Winter Games.
