Ben Bishop will never play another game in the NHL again, but it looks like he’ll finish his career officially with the Buffalo Sabres.
As first reported by ESPN’s Kevin Weekes, the Buffalo Sabres have acquired the final year of his $4.916-million cap hit in a cap dump to help the Sabres meet the cap floor. The Stars will also send a 2022 seventh-round pick in the deal in exchange for future considerations.
The Sabres currently have 15 players on their roster signed for next season, with none of the team’s goaltenders included. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen — a 23-year-old RFA — is expected to make his mark with the team full-time next season.
Bishop retired due to a career-ending knee injury that limited him to just one AHL start this past season.
Bishop, 35, was a three-time Vezina finalist, with his last time coming in 2018-19. Bishop finishes with a 222-128-36 record with 33 shutouts over 11 years with Tampa Bay, Dallas, St. Louis, Ottawa and Los Angeles.
Prior to his retirement announcement in December, only Jonathan Quick (342) and Craig Anderson (295) had more wins among active American NHL goaltenders.
