On Monday evening, Herb Carnegie will be formally inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Ryan Kennedy spoke with Bryant McBride, co-chair of the Carnegie Initiative and the first Black executive of the NHL, about the significance of Herb Carnegie in the hockey world.
“It’s amazing history,” McBride said about Carnegie’s legacy.
“In December 1955 – exactly the same week that Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in Montgomery, Ala. on that bus that lit the fuse to the civil rights movement – that’s the week that Herb Carnegie started the first registered hockey school in Canada,” McBride said. “That resulted in all kinds of kids of different backgrounds playing together.
“To think about he was doing that work in December 1955 and then did it for six decades – wow.”
The late Carnegie will be inducted into the Hall of Fame with fellow Class of 2022 members Roberto Luongo, Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin, Daniel Alfredsson and Riikka Sallinen in Monday’s induction ceremony beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on TSN 4 and 5 and the NHL Network.
