After winning the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in June, former New York Islanders forward Kyle Okposo announced his retirement from hockey on Thursday.
Okposo announced the news in a letter posted on social media by the Creative Artists Agency, where he is represented by Pat Brisson.
Across the letter, Okposo reflected on his upbringing in the NHL and thanked the players, coaches, trainers, and family members who helped him reach his dream. He also thanked the three teams he spent time with over his 17-year career.
“A huge thank you to the New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers,” he said. “I always tried to reciprocate the trust you put in me.”
In nine seasons with the Islanders, Okposo tallied 139 goals and 230 assists for 369 points in 529 games.
Altogether, he notched 242 goals and 372 assists for 614 points in 1,051 contests. Among other career highlights, he served as Sabres captain for two seasons and made the All-Star Game in 2017.
