Former Ottawa Senator Chris Tierney is starting a new chapter in his hockey career. After 11 seasons in the NHL, four of them in Ottawa, Tierney has signed on to play in the KHL this season. He got a one-year contract with HC Dinamo Minsk.
In 2012, Tierney was drafted 55th overall by the San Jose Sharks and won two OHL titles with the London Knights. He arrived in Ottawa as part of that massive haul in the 2018 Erik Karlsson trade, and over his four seasons here, he became a useful player for the Sens.
His first season in Ottawa was his best, posting 48 points, which would end up being a career high.
In 2022, when his contract ended with the Senators, Tierney left as a UFA and got a one-year, two-way contract with the Florida Panthers. They assigned him to Charlotte to start the 2022-23 season, the first time he’d been sent to the AHL since 2016. He saw just 13 games in Florida before the Panthers placed him on waivers and he was claimed by the Habs.
Last season, Tierney signed another one-year, two-way contract with the New Jersey Devils. He played in 52 NHL games last season, scoring 12 points, and frequently played on a line with another former Senator, Curtis Lazar.
At age 30, Tierney begins one man’s strange journey from Newark to Minsk, and leaves behind an NHL career where he scored 248 points in 649 games.
