Austin Bruins stay hot, earn fifth consecutive victory

Oct. 14—ABERDEEN, S.D. — There’s not a hotter team in the North American Hockey League than the Austin Bruins.

And, like they did a year ago, the Bruins are winning in many different ways.

Friday night, it was a familiar storyline: 16 saves from No. 1 goalie Trent Wiemken and timely and balanced scoring from a deep group of forwards. It all added up to a 3-2 Bruins victory in a North American Hockey League game against the Aberdeen Wings at Odde Ice Center.

The Bruins are now 8-1-0 in their first nine games of the NAHL season, their only loss a narrow 3-2 setback against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs on Sept. 16, the final day of the NAHL Showcase.

Since that loss, the Bruins have won five consecutive games, four of those coming by one goal and the fifth coming by two goals, with an empty-netter thrown in.

Friday’s game was no different — dramatic to the end, but ultimately a win for Austin. Gustav Noren scored with just 1:25 remaining in the third period to lift the Bruins past the Wings. Bruins captain Austin Salani had tied the score late in the second period after Austin fell behind 2-1.

The newest Bruin — 6-5 power forward Will Diamond — showed he has some offensive talent, too, scoring his first goal as a Bruin late in the first period to put his new team up 1-0.

Austin (8-1-0) will look for its ninth win in 10 games at 7:15 p.m. Saturday in the finale of the two-game weekend series against the Wings (4-4-3).

BOX SCORE: Austin Bruins 3, Aberdeen Wings 2
