Miller will play in his 800th career game tonight. The centerman enters his sixth season with the Canucks, who he’s played the most games for in his career. Initially drafted in 2011 by the New York Rangers, the forward played five seasons for New York and two with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“The older I get, the more I respect guys that can play a long time,” Miller told reporters. [I feel] super lucky [and] fortunate, especially health-wise, to play this many games. There was a time 10 or 11 years ago when I was just trying to get in the lineup. I feel very, very lucky to be where I’m at.”

Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet had high praise for last season’s leading point scorer, and it wasn’t just about his on-ice play.

“He’s always trying to get better every day, physically and mentally. His approach to the game, and how can he be better? Off the ice and on the ice, when it comes to the game, I have a lot of respect for him,” Tocchet said. “He’s changed as a person. As a 23 24-year-old to now, he’s here at the rink early. He’s watching video. He’s comes into camp in great shape. He wants the powerplay to be good. He wants to work on his own defensive part of the game. He’ll go grab a coach to watch video. I think he’s one of those guys that really wants to apply himself.”

The Canucks take on the Flames in the season opener with the hopes of building off last season’s terrific success.
