After moving on from Vitek Vanecek and Ilya Samsonov, the Washington Capitals have landed the top goaltender in free agency.
The Capitals have announced the signing of Stanley Cup champion Darcy Kuemper to a five-year, $5.25-million AAV deal.
Kuemper, 32, backstopped the Avalanche to the team’s first Stanley cup since 2001 this year, recording a 10-4-0 record. Kuemper missed time on two occasions due to injuries, with coach Jared Bednar saying he had to “re-train his eye” to get back into playing shape.
Nonetheless, Kuemper’s numbers were near the top among starters last season and has done a good job of getting a lot done no matter the situation.
With the Capitals looking to capitalize on the final years of Alex Ovechkin, getting Kuemper should go a long way in keeping the team in contention.
