Chris Johnston predicts the Nylander contract will come in at 8 years & north of $11-million per season: Leafs Morning Take

Incredibly, NHL All-Star Weekend in Toronto is now less than a month away.

On Thursday night, to the surprise of absolutely no one, Auston Matthews was named an All-Star for the fifth time in his relatively young career. 30 goals in 35 games will do it —that’s for sure.

Carter Hutton filled in for Jay Rosehill on the Friday edition of Leafs Morning Take. We kicked off the show by discussing Matthews, his greatness, and how he’ll pretty much be the unofficial host of All-Star Weekend for the Maple Leafs. Furthermore, you just know his buddy Justin Bieber’s going to be in the mix as well. He has celebrity coach written all over him.

Presented by Door Dash, The Appetizer focused on Toronto’s visit to San Jose on Saturday night. In a weird scheduling quirk, the Leafs are prepping for a home and home with the last place Sharks, who’ve dropped 10 in a row. On top of that, Noah Gregor will make his return to SAP Center. Considering how effective he’s been for the Leafs, it still makes zero sense why San Jose elected to move on from the 25-year-old.

After that, thanks to our friends over at BATL Axe, we welcomed in NHL Insider Chris Johnston (TSN/The Athletic/SDPN) for his first appearance of the season. In addition to discussing the very latest on the William Nylander front, we dissected Toronto’s ongoing search on the trade market as well as Auston Matthews’ involvement in All-Star Weekend.

Additionally, courtesy the Wendy’s Daily Faceoff Survivor, we mulled over if the Leafs should open up extension talks with any of the one-year deal guys. January 1st has passed, which means they’re good to do something —if they’re so inclined to do. For the record, we both agreed that they have to figure out the Nylander thing first —at the very least.

Jay Rosehill will be back in the mix on Monday. Join us as we recap the front end of the home and home with San Jose as well as look ahead to Tuesday night’s tilt in Toronto.
