Drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft, Gambrell made the Blue Jackets out of training camp but did not see a game with the team.

Having spent the 2023-24 season with the Toronto Marlies, Gambrell scored 14 goals and added 22 assists for 36 points in 66 regular season games. He added one goal in three playoff games.

Since turning pro at the end of the 2017-18 season, Gambrell has seen NHL time with the Sharks and the Ottawa Senators. Having suited up in 233 career NHL regular season games, Gambrell has collected 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points.

If Gambrell clears waivers, he will be an important add for the Cleveland Monsters. Having proven to be a reliable player on the Marlies last year, he would most likely assume a top-six role out of the gates.
