The NHL and Amazon announced in June that they’d be releasing a documentary series in the fall, going behind the scenes in the lives of eleven NHL stars. A trailer for the series was released today, along with a name — Faceoff: Inside the NHL — and a release date of October 4th.
The series will consist of six episodes filmed during the 2023-24 season, each focusing on two or three players. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Zach Hyman will be the focus of the fifth episode, Cup or Bust Part I, while McDavid will share the spotlight with Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk in Cup or Bust Part II.
The inclusion of Hyman is a nice surprise, as he was not one of the eleven players mentioned in the original series announcement in June. Other episodes will focus on William Nylander, David Pastrnak, Quinn Hughes, and Jack Eichel, among others.
The series is said to give NHL fans unprecedented access to their favourite teams and players, both on and off the ice. The trailer alone has already given us more of an insight into McDavid than we usually get. One short clip shows the Oilers’ captain screaming at his locker room after a poor road performance during the Stanley Cup Finals.
This is only one part of the NHL and Amazon’s announcements today. After it was announced last week that a few Oilers games would be aired exclusively on Prime Video this season, the NHL shed some more light on that situation.
Their newest venture with Amazon is Prime Monday Night Hockey, a weekly broadcast aired exclusively on Prime Video on, you guessed it, Monday nights. The Oilers will feature in four of these broadcasts:
-
Vs. New Jersey on November 4th
-
At Montreal on November 18th
-
Vs. Florida on December 16th
-
Vs. Los Angeles on April 14th
Amazon also announced NHL Coast to Coast, an NFL Red Zone-style show on Thursday nights, taking viewers on a tour of that night’s action across the league.
Finally, Amazon announced the broadcast team for Monday Night Hockey, including Oilers legend Mark Messier and former NHLers Thomas Hickey and Jody Shelley.
