“Slow first [period]. [We tried] to do some things that we’ve talked about a lot through training camp, and really talked a lot this morning,” Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky said. “We saw some positivity in that regard. Thought we got better as the game went on.”
Klim Kostin’s second preseason goal gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead 53 seconds into the second period. Will Smith and Jake Walman assisted on the play.
At 7:54 of the second period, the Anaheim Ducks tied the game at one with a goal from Frank Vatrano. It was his second of the preseason. Troy Terry and Brian Dumoulin assisted on the play.
Cutter Gauthier gave the Ducks a 2-1 lead 3:02 into the third period with his second goal of the preseason. Leo Carlsson and Alex Killorn got the assists.
“It’s fun. Obviously, I’ve spent a year with him [at Boston College], and also being with him at the US program, we’ve spent a lot of time together,” Smith said. “Especially last year, having that run all the way to the national championship. It’s a special bond that whole team has. It’s pretty cool, having two of us in the NHL.”
Henry Thrun tied the game at two with 3:54 left in the third period. It was Thrun’s first of the preseason, assisted by William Eklund.
Vitek Vanecek made 40 saves for San Jose. Lukas Dostal made 22 saves for the Ducks.
“Yeah, he was solid,” Warsofsky said about Vanecek. “Tracking pucks. [he] kept us in the hockey game when we were probably under siege a little bit at times.”
