The Philadelphia Flyers have placed forward Oskar Lindblom on unconditional waivers for the purposes of a buyout.
Lindblom, 25, became a fan favorite in Philadelphia after battling back from Ewing’s Sarcoma to return to the ice. Lindblom carried an AAV of $3 million, giving the team some extra cap space ahead of what should be a busy free agency period for the team.
Lindblom had 26 points in 79 games with the Flyers this year, with the 2014 fifth-round pick posting 97 points over 263 games, all with the Flyers.
“This was a very difficult decision to make and one that we spent a lot of time examining,” Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher said. “No one can question the desire, will and strength to overcome all that Oskar has been through off the ice in order to return to the game he loves. Further, Oskar’s commitment to his teammates and impact in our room has been immeasurable. He is truly an inspiration to us all and he will always remain a special part of the Philadelphia Flyers family. We wish him all the best as he continues his NHL career.”
The Flyers announced that the team will make a $100,000 donation in Lindblom’s name to a local organization that supports families impacted by cancer.
