Interim general manager Danny Briere crossed off a restricted free agent from his to-do list Tuesday.

The Flyers signed Egor Zamula to a new one-year, $775,000 contract. The 23-year-old defenseman’s entry-level contract was set to expire this offseason. The undrafted product turned an amateur tryout with the Flyers into an ELC back in 2018. Back then, Zamula was a willowy and raw unknown prospect. Over time, he has developed into a pro player with intriguing upside.

Zamula was in the Flyers’ opening night lineup this season and played 14 games for the big club. The lefty shot recorded four assists, 13 blocked shots and 13:23 minutes per game. He saw a three-game audition during March, which was highlighted by a strong performance in a win over the Panthers, a team that just stunned the Bruins in the first round of the playoffs.

“He’s long, takes up a lot of space,” Flyers head coach John Tortorella said in March. “The thing that caught our eye was his ability to see the ice, it looks like he has the ability to make a play.”

Zamula did not play for AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley in the Calder Cup Playoffs because of season-ending surgery on his left shoulder. He’s expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of Flyers training camp during September.

At his end-of-the-season press conference in April, Tortorella said he’d like to see more youth come into the Flyers’ defensive picture. Zamula will look to be in the mix. The Flyers know they have more work to do with Zamula, but Tortorella has liked his potential.

Forwards Noah Cates and Morgan Frost and defenseman Cam York are among some of the Flyers’ other RFAs in line for new deals before next season.
