Former Leaf Cory Cross loves the Chris Tanev pick-up for Toronto: Leafs Morning Take

by

Another day, another summer edition of Leafs Morning Take.

Without question, the dog days of summer are officially here. That said, t-minus 63 days until the season opener in Montreal on October 9th, so at least there’s that to look forward to.

We kicked off the latest edition of Leafs Morning Take by discussing the significance of August 7th. Not only is it my birthday, but more importantly, it’s Sidney Crosby’s 37th birthday. It’s official: Sid The Kid is no longer a kid. Seriously, it’s hard to come to terms with the fact that in a few years, Crosby will be retired. That said, he’s still very good, so that won’t be happening anytime soon.

Additionally, we discussed Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s day with the Stanley Cup in Sweden. Furthermore, we discussed his potential role on the back-end and how much of a difference maker he could turn out to be on the blue line for Craig Berube and company.

Presented by Greta Bar YYZ, we talked some Jake McCabe. Lost in all the offseason hoopla is the fact that the 30-year-old is now less than a year away from unrestricted free agency. Behind the scenes, you have to think that there’s been substantial conversations about extending him, right? Since being acquired from Chicago at the 2023 trade deadline, McCabe’s performed admirably. He’s supremely old school, and by the game, he’s looked more and more comfortable in Toronto. Simply put, you need guys like Jake McCabe on your back end if you’re going to be successful in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

After that, former Leafs blue liner Cory Cross joined us. It’s always fun getting someone on from the Pat Quinn era. That team was unbelievable. They won a series on the regular, too. Cory dished on his time in Toronto, his unusual path to the NHL, and he even weighed in on the current team a bit, too.

Leafs Morning Take will return with one episode at some point next week. You’ll hear from former Leafs head coach and current coach and general manager of Adler Mannheim (DEL) Dallas Eakins!
