On Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs participated in the fourth installment of BarDown’s popular YouTube series, “Call out other teams for fun.” Nine members of the Maple Leafs appeared in a YouTube video nearly a week ago for the channel which showcased the players attempting to identify their own goal horn – hilariously failing.

In the newest video, the BarDown team got the answers to questions on a range of topics, from the team’s city with their favorite restaurants to answers that highlighted their most significant rivalries.
Though New York and Chicago were the standout choices when asked about cities with great dining options, the Leafs mostly agreed that the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens were the teams that topped the list for opponents they dislike losing to the most.
“These two teams (Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens). There is a long tradition here in Toronto, and we had a really tough loss to one team in particular last spring,” said John Tavares, reflecting on the 2023-24 postseason.
The players were also tasked with guessing which organization they had scored the most goals against. Those who had spent more time in Toronto were able to guess based on divisional matchups. Among those who answered correctly were Tavares (Carolina), Matthew Knies (Tampa and Pittsburgh), Max Domi (Edmonton), Auston Matthews (Montreal), and William Nylander (Montreal).
When asked if he had any particular goal that was his favorite, Matthews said, “All of them,” to which Nylander humorously added, “16? That is a lot to remember,” referring to his total goal count against the Canadiens.
The sit down also highlighted a player who caught their surprise by complimenting them following a game, with Knies mentioning that Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy praised him following their hard-fought series last spring.
“I met with (Charlie) McAvoy, he said some nice things. It was a pretty hard battle with each other, so, yeah, it was nice to hear that,” Knies said, recalling the club’s opening-round series against the Bruins.

Other nods of appreciation, discussing the most memorable compliments, were given to Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby (to Marner and Domi), Henrik Lundqvist (to Joseph Woll), Carey Price (to Anthony Stolarz), and Mike Modano (to Tavares) – who all received praise from the lineup of NHL stars.
As the group discussed which team they accumulated the most penalty minutes against, Knies had a witty remark upon discovering it was the Florida Panthers. “I hated them, so I think I’ve gotten a few penalties against them,” he said. This is understandable, given that Knies had his first taste of playoff hockey in the 2022-23 season, where he suffered a concussion after Sam Bennett cross-checked him into the boards during the second-round series.
Knies also mentioned that he “would never let them know if it’s a good chirp,” referring to the trash talk between him and the Panthers.
Other topics to guess included which players they would want to swap jerseys with, the team with the best golfer, the goal horn they like hearing the least (with the Columbus Blue Jackets taking that title), and which teams have the least intimidating fans.
One question, as highlighted by Knies, was about which team had the best ‘chirper’ (trash talker) in the league. Matthews named former teammate and close friend, Michael Bunting.
“I played with this guy, so I’m going to go with Michael Bunting. There’s been a couple of good ones and a couple of really bad ones. Last year, I think he was going at it with Domi or something, and it was nice to just sit there and watch it all go down.”
Marner also praised teammate and enforcer Ryan Reaves, saying, “I’ll give Ryan some love, he’s got some pretty good one-liners in there that he throws out.”
Collectively, the video had a good mix of some strong, but honest answers and it’ll be interesting to see how both individual and team rivalries unfold as the 2024-25 season approaches.
