Clayton Keller scored the game-winning goal with 54 seconds left in overtime, and the Utah Hockey Club continued its perfect start with a 6-5 upset of the New York Rangers Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
Utah (3-0-0) not only spoiled the Blueshirts’ home opener, but also joined the Vegas Golden Knights as the only other NHL expansion team to win its first three games.
Once again, goalscoring was plentiful as the teams combined for 7 goals in the second period alone, before New York’s Will Cuylle tied the game midway through the third period.
But Keller took advantage of a defensive breakdown late in overtime, walking untouched in front before lifting a backhander high on Igor Shesterkin to end proceedings.
New York (1-0-1) was led by Artemi Panarin’s two-goal night, including one on the power play.
The club will now look to complete the East Coast sweep Monday night at New Jersey.
