MIAC Athletes of the Week – December 6, 2021

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for basketball and hockey on Monday. Student-athletes from Macalester, Saint John’s, and Saint Mary’s claimed the Conference’s weekly honors for November 29 – December 5, 2021.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference’s sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the winter season, team sports (basketball and hockey) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (swimming & diving and indoor track & field) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week
Raheem Anthony
Saint Mary’s University

Raheem Anthony scored a game- and career-high 35 points – including the game-winning basket with four seconds remaining in regulation – to lift the Cardinals to a 68-66 victory over St. Scholastica on 12/4. Anthony’s effort put an exclamation point on a remarkable week for the sharp-shooting guard, who opened the week scoring 23 points in Saint Mary’s 73-63 loss to Saint John’s on 12/1. All told, Anthony averaged 29.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in the Cardinals’ two conference matchups last week. He shot 55.6 percent from the field, knocking down 25 of 45 field-goal attempts – including four 3-pointers – and was 4-of-12 from the free-throw line.

MIAC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week
Emma LaFrenz
Macalester College

Edina, Minn.

Emma LaFrenz averaged a double-double with 13.0 points and 15.0 rebounds in three games for the Scots last week. LaFrenz had a monster performance against Crown on 12/2, grabbing 24 rebounds and scoring 23 points. LaFrenz also had nine rebounds to go with 11 points at St. Olaf on 11/30, and 12 rebounds to go with five points at Gustavus on 12/4. She finished the week with five blocks and four steals on defense as well.


MIAC Men’s Hockey Athlete of the Week
Mac Berglove
Saint John’s University

Mac Berglove posted a 1.00 goals-allowed average and a .964 save percentage with 53 total saves as Saint John’s extended its win streak to four games with a sweep of Gustavus over the weekend. Berglove posted 34 saves on 12/2 and 19 stops on 12/4 with one goal allowed in each victory. He is now 4-0 with a 1.24 GAA and a .949 save percentage with 94 saves during the Johnnies’ current win streak.

MIAC Women’s Hockey Athlete of the Week
Kas Kingston
Saint Mary’s University

Kas Kingston had a hand in three of the Cardinals’ four goals, scoring twice – including on a game-winner in overtime – as Saint Mary’s swept St. Olaf in a weekend conference series. Kingston kicked off the weekend by scoring Saint Mary’s first goal – her first in a Cardinal uniform – and assisting on the late, third-period game-winner in SMU’s 2-1 road win over the Oles on 12/3. The following afternoon, Kingston assisted on the team’s opening goal and scored one of her own 13 seconds into overtime to give the Cards their second straight 2-1 victory, and a sweep of their conference series with the Oles.
