Mordini’s Two-Goal Effort Secures 3-1 Victory Over Norwich; EC Earns NEHC Tournament’s Top Seed

NORTHFIELD, VT. – In comeback fashion, the Elmira College women’s ice hockey program erased an early 1-0 deficit after tallying a pair of goals in the second period before eventually securing a 3-1 victory against NEHC foe Norwich University on Saturday from Kreitzberg Arena.

The Soaring Eagles secured their second consecutive NEHC regular season title with the win along with the overall No. 1 seed and home-ice advantage throughout the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday, February 18 against Salem State at 3:00 P.M. inside the Murray Athletic Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Elmira and Norwich would trade scoring opportunities early in the first period with the Soaring Eagles holding a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Cadets would strike first as Ingrid Holstad-Berge tallied a goal for Norwich in her third consecutive game against the Soaring Eagles to make it 1-0 at the 9:39 mark.

The Soaring Eagles would battle to keep the score at 1-0 through the opening 20 minutes of action and needed only 52 seconds in the second period before knotting the score 1-1. Morgan Mordini ’22 netted her first of two goals for the Purple & Gold after taking a feed from Holley Riva ’23. Skating on the power play later in the frame, it would be Mordini who put the Soaring Eagles ahead of the Cadets 2-1 at the 15:00 mark. Katie Manning ’25 and Riva would both be credited with assists on Mordini’s go-ahead strike.

Emma Bradbury ’26 tallied the lone goal of the third period to give the Soaring Eagles a 3-1 advantage at the 16:00 mark. Erika Goleniak ’25 and Madi Morton ’24 would both help to set up the power-play goal for the Soaring Eagles, who finished the contest 2-for-3 with the extra skater.

Elmira held a 25-17 edge in shots against Norwich in the contest as Leonie-Louise Kuehberger ’25 stopped 16 shots to improve to 17-4-0 between the pipes this season for the Purple & Gold. The Soaring Eagles also successfully killed a pair of Norwich power-play opportunities late in the second period and early in the third period.

UP NEXT:
The Purple & Gold host Salem State, who is the No. 8 seed in the NEHC Tournament at the Murray Athletic Center on February 18 at 3:00 P.M. The highest remaining seed in the semifinal round will host the lowest remaining seed on Saturday, February 25 at a time to be determined.
