Following an impressive preseason with the Boston Bruins in which he tallied three goals and five points in as many games, Guelph Storm forward Matthew Poitras continued to turn heads in his NHL debut on Wednesday.

In the Bruins’ season opener – a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, the 19-year-old finished with an assist and twp shots on goal in nearly 15 minutes of ice time, while also going 5/7 on faceoffs. His assist came on Trent Frederic’s game-tying marker midway through the opening frame.

Flanked a pair of other young NHLers in Trent Frederic and Morgan Geekie, the centreman also operated as the pivot on Boston’s second power play unit.

The 54th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, Poitras finished fifth in OHL scoring in 2022-23 with 79 assists and 95 points in 63 games. The Brooklin, Ont. native was projected to win the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy as top scorer in 2023-24 by 30% of OHL Accredited Media in the 2023-24 season predictions poll.
