The Ontario Hockey League is saddened by news of the sudden passing of alumnus and San Jose Sharks amateur scout Bryan Marchment. The former OHL blueliner and long-time NHL rearguard was just 53 years-old, and died unexpectedly in Montreal where he was preparing for the 2022 NHL Draft.
Known for his physical edge and punishing hip-checks, Marchment played parts of 17 NHL seasons from 1989-2006 with Winnipeg, Hartford, Edmonton, Tampa Bay, San Jose, Colorado, Toronto and Calgary.
Prior to his pro career, Marchment patrolled the blue line for the Belleville Bulls from 1985-89. The Scarborough, Ont. native joined the Bulls as the 12th overall pick of the 1985 OHL Priority Selection, collecting 32 goals, 140 assists, 172 points and 861 penalty minutes over 208 regular season games. He was chosen 16th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1987 NHL Draft and wore the ‘C’ in Belleville before making the jump to the NHL following minor league duty with the AHL’s Moncton Hawks.
Marchment had been with the Sharks organization for 15 seasons, spending time as both an amateur scout and a Defencemen Development Coach in work with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. His son Mason Marchment currently plays for the Florida Panthers and spent parts of two seasons in the OHL with Erie, Hamilton and Mississauga.
Marchment is survived by wife Kim, son Mason and daughter Logan.
