Maple Leafs training camp is off to a flying start.
As per usual, especially in this market, it was an eventful media day on Wednesday
That said, we kicked off the latest edition of Leafs Morning Take by discussing the new helmet sponsorship with Oreo. After all the speculation, that was the payoff to the cryptic ad campaign that was launched last week. Whatever. After that, we dove into some of the initial line combinations to start training camp. While it’s way too early to put much stock into anything, it is important to note that Craig Berube liked to spread the wealth in St. Louis. I think the goal is to have four strong lines.
Presented by Greta Bar YYZ, we kicked off the show by dissecting some of the major storylines early on in camp. Among them, we discussed what Nick Robertson, Mitch Marner, and John Tavares had to say about their respective situations. Unsurprisingly, Marner nor Tavares really wanted to discuss their contractual status. Both players are entering contract years. It will be interesting to see how those two situations play out during the course of the season. On top of that, we broke down William Nylander’s return to centre. Initially, it looks like he’ll line up with Max Domi and Calle Jarnkrok.
Meantime, we also broke down Easton Cowan’s game and what he has to do to get into the good graces of his coaching staff. Undeniably, there’s a spot there for the 19-year-old to grab, it’s up to him now to go out there and earn it. After that, we played a new game to the podcast this season called, ‘Take It, Or Leaf It.” Essentially, it’s like Tinder, but with Leafs questions. The first go-around went swimmingly.
We’ll be back next Tuesday at 11 AM ET with a brand new episode of Leafs Morning Take. Also, for those wondering, season No. 3 of the show will officially launch on Monday, October 7th. We’re excited to get going!
