On Tuesday, the Penguins announced that they signed goaltender Sergei Murashov, their fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, to a three-year, entry-level contract.
The 20-year-old Russian netminder has spent time in both the KHL and MHL, and he put up very good numbers in both. His short career in the KHL includes a 4-1-2 record with a 1.42 goals-against average (GAA) and .936 save percentage (SV%), while he has posted a 2.02 GAA and .934 SV% over his last three seasons in the MHL.
Murashov’s stock has risen considerably since being drafted by the Penguins, and the 6-foot-1, 172-pound netminder should almost immediately profile as the organization’s top goaltending prospect.
Murashov will join a packed prospect pool of goaltenders for the Penguins, the likes of which include Taylor Gauthier, Filip Larsson, and 2020 second-round pick Joel Blomqvist. Blomqvist figures to see some playing time at the NHL level next season, as he posted a 25-12-6 record, a 2.16 GAA, and a .921 SV% last season with AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Murashov won the MHL award for Best Goaltender in the 2022-23 season, when he posted a 1.53 GAA and a .948 SV% with 24 wins and 11 shutouts.
