Rick Bowness chimes in on the Marner situation: Leafs Morning Take

by

Former New York Islanders head coach Lane Lambert could be earmarked for Craig Berube’s staff —that’s the latest.

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Leafs, who are said to be combing through various options behind the scenes right now, could be eyeing the 59-year-old. At the end of the day, it seems like Berube will have big-time say in what his staff looks like it, which is the right way for Toronto to approach matters. That’s how we kicked off the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. When it comes to assistant coaches in Toronto, a lot seems to be up in the air right now. We do know Mike Yeo, who parted ways with the Canucks last week, won’t be coming home. Instead, the long-time NHL coach will be joining Travis Green’s staff in Ottawa. That was finally confirmed on Tuesday morning.

At any rate, presented by Greta Bar YYZ, we dove into all the Mitch Marner hoopla from Monday. In case you missed it, on the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman caused quite the stir when he disclosed that there’s no guarantee that Marner, who’s eligible for a contract extension on July 1, will be moved in the coming days. In fact, the NHL Insider suggested this whole thing could drag into next season. Additionally, Pierre LeBrun of the Athletic/TSN added that the Marner camp currently has no plans to discuss an extension or a trade list. Their preference is to honour the last year of his contract and see where things go.

Meantime, thanks to Wendy’s, recently retired head coach Rick Bowness, who undoubtedly will be headed into the Hockey Hall of Fame one day, dropped by the show. We talked about his storied coaching career before shifting focus to the Maple Leafs. We asked him about goaltending, star players, and what could be happening behind the scenes between Berube, Treliving, the Leafs, and the Marner camp right now. Obviously, Bowness brought a wealth of experience, perspective, and knowledge to the conversation.

Anthony Stewart will fill in for Jay Rosehill on the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Talk at 11 AM ET!
