Several Oilers Make Surprise Appearance With Sam Gagner

EDMONTON — Sam Gagner is an all-time favorite amongst Edmonton Oilers fans.

The Oilers sixth overall pick in the 2007 Entry Draft can’t seem to escape the organization. After playing for the Oilers for seven seasons he found himself traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Teddy Purcell on June 29th 2014. Later that day he was flipped to the Arizona Coyotes for a draft pick.

After signing as a free agent in a few of the following years, he was traded back to the Oilers. This time he was coming from the Vancouver Canucks, with Ryan Spooner going the other way.

Despite being traded a year later, Gagner earned a PTO with the Oilers before the 2023-24 season. He was coming off of double hip surgery and it felt like the right fit for both parties.

In the past few years Gagner has spent more energy into “paying it forward” in the hockey community. He founded Muskoka Hockey, a place for people to enjoy great scenery while honing their hockey skills.

Just the other day, Muskoka Hockey participants enjoyed a new arena, with a few notable names making an appearance.

Adam Henrique and Connor Brown can be seen near the beginning of the video that Gagner posted to Instagram. Henrique might be difficult to spot without his playoff beard, but he’s wearing #19 on his helmet. Brown is the first player seen skating down the ice in a blue jersey.

There are numerous other NHLers spotted in this video. John Tavares, Ryan McLeod and Brandon Montour are a few that are easy to pinpoint.

With September not too far away, on-ice sessions should be more frequent. It’s very unique to see this many players from a variety of different teams skating together. Good on Gagner for creating an environment to facilitate that.
