Soaring Eagles Drop First of Season to Babson on Friday Evening

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Elmira College Men’s Ice Hockey team dropped its first game of the season, falling to the Beavers from Babson College on Friday evening to open its first New England Hockey Conference roadtrip of the campaign. Elmira, who found themselves behind 2-0 after the first period, eventually trailed by three midway through the second before scoring all three of its goals in a matter of 2:38 to knot the score 3-3. 

Babson, who showed resilience in the final frame, would score the game-winner at the 8:33 mark from Ian Driscoll before Joseph Kramer scored at the 11:34 mark to give the Beavers some additional breathing room.

Elmira would record a pair of its goals off the stick of senior forward Shane Haviland ’24, while Jared Smith ’24 would score the other for the Soaring Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Beavers would first find the back of the net past Elmira netminder Kyle Curtin ’26 at the 11:45 mark in the first after Brendan Kennedy scored on assists from Ryan Murphy and Charlie Andriole. Less than three minutes later, the Beavers would cap the first period scoring as CJ Beals would score, unassisted, to put Babson ahead 2-0 heading into the first intermission.
  • In the second, Ian Driscoll would score his first of two on the evening to put the home team ahead by a trip on assists from Wyatt George and Mike Stevens. Following the goal, Jeffrey Zero ’23 would come in to replace Curtin, who finished the evening with ten saves in 27:10 of action. 
  • Just 35 seconds later, it would be Haviland who would break loose, putting Elmira on the scoreboard for the first time, unassisted. For Haviland, it was his first score of the season. 
  • After Babson’s Jimmy Fallon was sent to the penalty box on a hooking call, it would be Jared Smith scoring his second goal of the season on assists from the defensive unit of Amedeo Mastrangeli ’24 and Daniel Dimon ’24. 
  • After a missed shot from Haviland, the senior would have yet another chance, finding the back of the net on an assist from Bailey Krawczyk ’24 as the Soaring Eagles tied the contest at 3-3. 
  • Heading into the third, Elmira was unable to execute on the offensive end, while Driscoll and Kramer would score for the Beavers at the 8:33 mark and the 11:34 mark, respectively as the Beavers picked up its first win of the 2023-24 season. 
  • The Soaring Eagles would finish 1-for-3 on the power-play compared to 1-of-4 for the Beavers.
