The results are in, and the NHL announced that New Jersey Devils defenseman has been crowned the winner of the 2022 King Clancy Trophy, awarded to the player who “best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community,”
The King Clancy is voted on by a committee of senior NHL executives, led by commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly.
Subban, who beat out fellow finalists in Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf and Edmonton’s Darnell Nurse, is the first Devils player in franchise history to take home the honor.
Subban’s charitable efforts have been well-documented throughout his career.
After founding the PK Subban Foundation in 2014, Subban pledged a then-record $10 million donation to the Montreal Children’s Hospital in 2015. He also expanded his Blueline Buddies program this year, which helps connect local children in the New Jersey area to law enforcement and front line workers to foster positive relationships at a young age.
With his win, Subban continues to demonstrate the type of off-ice philanthropy that most players with his platform should.
