Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov leaves game injured two after collision

by

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov was forced out of the action in game two of their second-round series after he was injured.

The incident happened 37 seconds into the second defenceman when Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn dove to knock a puck off the stick of Flordia Panthers forward Carter Verhaeghe.

As Schenn knocked the puck away, he also took out Verhaeghe and slid hard into Samsonov. He was pushed back into the post and left the game. Schenn was issued a tripping penalty on the play, and Leafs backup Joseph Woll entered the game.

He was tested early and in the final seconds of that penalty, Anthony Duclair scored to get the Leafs on the board.

While Toronto would respond at the 7:32 mark of the period as Erik Gustafsson scored in just his second playoff game this year.

While held off the scoresheet earlier in the game, Verhaeghe managed to find the back of the net deflecting a Radko Gudas shot off his butt and in.

Sitting in the press box, Matt Murray went down to the Leafs room to serve as the emergency back up goaltender in case Woll was unable to play at any point in the remainder of the game.

At the time of writing, there’s no word on Samsonov’s injury and the score is tied at two in the second intermission.
