The Leafs & Matthews Knies’ camp have resumed contract talks: Leafs Morning Take

by

The Toronto Maple Leafs have now nine of 11. On top of that, they’ve won 11 of 14 on home ice this season.

Who are these guys?

The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta filled in for Jay Rosehill as co-host on the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. We kicked off the show by discussing the little tributes that Tyler Bertuzzi and T.J. Brodie received on Monday night. In Bertuzzi’s case, I thought it was hilarious considering he played one measly season for the squad, but I digress.

At any rate, we got into the nuts and bolts of Toronto’s 4-1 win over Chicago. Furthermore, the Leafs improved to 3-0-0 on Prime Monday Night Hockey. Auston Matthews scored his sixth of the campaign and Anthony Stolarz made 27 stops to improve to 8-4-2. Meantime, Fraser Minten potted his second career goal. He’s up to four points in five outings since his AHL recall. Craig Berube gushed about the 20-year-old’s game last night. Additionally, we talked about Phil Myers’ second game as a Leaf and what in the world’s going on with Jani Hakanpaa. The penalty kill was great, too, going 4-for-4. Lane Lambert has done a tremendous job.

After that, we got a bit of a development on the Matthew Knies contract front. As I put out on X this morning, it’s my understanding that the Leafs and Knies’ camp have re-engaged in discussions recently. Nothing’s imminent, but talks are back on. Naturally, we dissected what his new contract could like. After potting an empty netter against Chicago, the 22-year-old now has 10 goals in 22 games. He’s been awesome.

Then, with Pagnotta being a NHL Insider and all, we talked some potential Leafs trade targets. In case you missed it, Jeff Marek floated the name Nazem Kadri as a potential target on the debut edition of The Sheet. On paper, it makes a lot of sense. That said, it would be difficult for Toronto to make it work financially. On top of that, Calgary’s having a decent season, so at this point, it’s extremely unlikely that they would even be open to trading Kadri. One to keep in the vault, for sure.

Zack Phillips and Jay Rosehill will guide you along on the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. In addition to previewing Leafs/Predators, they will play our interview with Luke Schenn from earlier this week.
