The Dallas Stars are re-stocking their blueline ahead of the likely departure of John Klingberg in the coming days.
That process includes the latest move from GM Jim Nill on a busy free agent frenzy, as the Stars have reportedly come to terms with defenseman Colin Miller on a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $1.85 million.
Miller has long been an analytics darling throughout his career, putting up impressive underlying numbers for the past few seasons despite struggling to lock down a roster spot on both the Vegas Golden Knights and the Buffalo Sabres.
In 38 games for the Sabres last season, Miller racked up a decent two goals and 12 assists for 14 points while logging a little under 19 minutes in ice time per night. Injuries played a factor in Miller’s depleted service time in 2021-22, with the 29-year-old now getting a fresh start in a new organization that comes with the commitment of a multi-year deal.
For a puck-moving right-shot defender who is still on the right side of 30, $1.85 million is not a bad bet at all — especially for a Stars team with little in terms of cap space.
Miller won’t move the needle all on his own. But in the right situation and with a dash of injury luck, he could potentially be a valued contributor for the Stars moving forward and possibly even slide into the top-four in a pinch.
