Rangers, Jaroslav Halak have had preliminary talks on contract extension: report

The Rangers are set for the foreseeable future as far as starting goalie with Igor Shesterkin between the pipes, but they will be in the market for his backup once again this offseason.

New York has reportedly had “preliminary conversations” with last years backup, Jaroslav Halak, about a potential reunion on Broadway.

Halak’s agent, Allan Walsh, told the Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun that the 38-year-old is “100 percent committed to playing in the NHL next year.”

Now that the Rangers have their head coach in place, hiring long time NHL coach Peter Laviolette, Walsh expects to have more conversations with GM Chris Drury prior to the beginning of free agency on July 1.

Halak signed a one-year deal with the Rangers last season and he appeared in 25 games (24 starts) behind Shesterkin. He went 10-9-5 over that span and posted one shutout, a 2.72 GAA, and a .903 save percentage.
