The only thing missing from John Tavares’ milestone night at UBS Arena was a victory —but so be it.
They got a point, right?
Carter Hutton was in for Jay Rosehill on the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Presented by Door Dash, The Appetizer primarily focused on the captain. Tavares notched a goal and an assist as the Leafs fell 4-3 in OT to the New York Islanders. Furthermore, the 33-year-old’s now 6-4-2 in 12 all-time outings against his former team. The moment had it all. Point No. 1000 was special. In case you missed it, Tavares tipped a point shot right onto the stick of Morgan Rielly who made no mistake to nod the game at 3 with just 6.4 seconds remaining in regulation. From the bench clearing to celebrate to Joe Tavares’ amazing reaction to Paul Marner’s stone cold face, the moment had a little of everything. Any way you slice it, Tavares deserves to be applauded. After all, it’s been a rough past week for Toronto sports fans.
Meantime, courtesy the Wendy’s Daily Faceoff Survivor, we previewed Tuesday’s tilt on Broadway versus the New York Rangers. Martin Jones will make his first start as a Toronto Maple Leaf. Igor Shesterkin will get the call for the Rangers, who are off to an impeccable 19-6-1 under new bench boss Peter Laviolette.
In general, we talked a lot about Toronto’s crease on this episode, which made a lot of sense with Hutton being in the mix. Carter had an excellent break down of Ilya Samsonov’s outing on Monday night. Believe it or not, he thinks the sky’s not falling despite the fact that Joseph Woll is out indefinitely with a high ankle sprain. Anyway, we’ll see how things go for Jones at MSG.
Jay Rosehill will be back for the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Join us at 11 AM ET as we recap Leafs/Rangers. Plus, we’ll look ahead to the rest of the week for the Maple Leafs.
