The Vancouver Canucks wrapped up their 2024 Young Stars Classic with a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames. Arshdeep Bains, Riley Patterson, Deagan McMillian and Vilmer Alriksson scored for the Canucks, while Nikita Tolopilo made 18 saves in the victory. With the win, Vancouver finishes the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record, outscoring their opposition 10-5 over the three games.

Despite falling behind 2-0 as they did yesterday against the Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver’s prospects were able to score four straight en route to a win. The Canucks were the better team for most of the night, outshooting Calgary 36-21, while their power play was able to finally convert after numerous chances throughout the weekend. Vancouver also got solid goaltending for Tolopilo, who stopped 13 of the 14 shots he in the final two periods.
One player that deserves a lot of credit for the Canucks comeback is Bains. After Vancouver went down 2-0, Bains was able to shift the momentum with a strong shift and later scored the Canucks opening goal of the game. While this was the only goal he scored, Bains was one of Vancouver’s best players throughout the tournament, showcasing both his strong defensive play and physicality.
Alriksson also had a strong performance, finishing with the game-winner and an assist. He was physical once again and showed his ability to get off quick shots that can beat goaltenders from distance. In the end, Alriksson was one of the players who got better every game and was able to showcase why he is such an intriguing prospect.

Lastly, the all-PTO line of McMillian, Cooper Walker and Ty Halaburda deserves a shoutout for the way they play. The trio played a physical game, which in turn led to the Canucks third goal of the afternoon. While they didn’t play a ton, they made the most of their opportunities, standing out positively whenever they were on the ice.

Now that the Young Stars Classic is complete, the focus shifts to training camp, which is scheduled to start on Thursday in Pentiction. This year’s camp is expected to feature many of these prospects, as well as all of Vancouver’s newest signings.
