ELMIRA, N.Y. â Three-year Elmira College Men’s Ice Hockey goaltender Chris Janzen ’21 has signed with the Evansville Thunderbolts of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), the league announced in its transactions portal on Tuesday evening.
A Pelham, Ontario native, Janzen arrived in Elmira for the 2019-20 season after spending two seasons at NCAA Division I Institution Clarkson University. In just three seasons, Janzen help lift the Soaring Eagles to its first UCHC Tournament Crown (2021) while most recently guiding the Purple & Gold to its first NCAA Tournament berth in nearly ten seasons during the 2021-22 campaign.
Statistically, Janzen goes down as one of the most successful goaltenders in the programs’ 49-year history. Allowing just 112 goals while corralling 1,258 saves over the course of 47 games played, his .918 save percentage ranks 1st in program history with the next closest being Rob Lingas ’02, Tony Mongillo ’88, and Casey Tuttle ’10 and with marks of .910%.
Additionally, his 2.48 goals against average (GAA) over the course of his Soaring Eagle career ranks 2nd in program history behind Tuttle.
Adam Eby ’21 recently signed with the Vermillion County Bobcats on March 20, making Janzen the second from this year’s team to sign with a team in the SPHL. Evansville and Vermillion County are slated to meet next week, April 7, inside the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.
