Any way you slice it, the Leafs found a way to get the job done on Wednesday night at Scotiabank Arena against the Winnipeg Jets.
It wasn’t pretty, though —that’s for sure. Far and away, against all odds, Ilya Samsonov was the biggest reason why the Leafs skated away with two points. He was incredible, especially the team in front of him didn’t show up for the first period.
We kicked off the Thursday edition of Leafs Morning Take by dissecting the two staged fights in Sunrise last night in Sunrise between the Panthers and the Arizona Coyotes. All the commotion stemmed from a Nick Cousins hit on Jason Zucker in early January. It had that old-time hockey feel to start that game. You love to see it. Unsurprisingly, Rosey was a big fan of it, too.
Presented by Door Dash, The Appetizer focused on Toronto’s 1-0 shutout victory against Winnipeg. We spent a lot of time talking about Sheldon Keefe. Understandably so, he did not seem to be in a great mood. Keefe even went as far as to bench Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on a few power plays in the second period. Finally, some accountability in this market. Additionally, we obviously broke down Samsonov’s night. It’s hard to believe that this guy was placed on waivers just 24 short days ago. Also, we highlighted another strong outing for Nick Robertson. He’s really played well lately, and it’s good to see him getting rewarded for that.
Meantime, thanks to our friends over at BATL Axe, NHL Insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period and SiriusXM NHL Network Radio dropped by the show. We discussed Sheldon Keefe, accountability, the trade market, and what could potentially happen with Mitch Marner and his next contract.
