Elfring And Millins Score As Soaring Eagles Drop 3-2 Decision Against Plattsburgh

MIDDLEBURY, VT. – Claire Elfring ’25 and Kelly Millins ’23 both scored for the third-ranked Elmira College women’s ice hockey program as the Soaring Eagles saw their season come to an end in the NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Third-Place matchup. Second-ranked Plattsburgh scored in the third period to secure a 3-2 decision on Saturday at Chip Kenyon Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Soaring Eagles would open the scoring in the first period as Elfring found herself in a one-on-one situation. Elfring took a wrist shot that would beat the goalkeeper at the 6:56 mark to give the Purple & Gold a 1-0 advantage.

Elmira would take a one-goal advantage into the locker room after the opening 20 minutes of action despite being outshot by the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh worked to knot the score early in the second period as Nicole Unsworth found the back of the net at the 4:34 mark. The Soaring Eagles responded with a go-ahead goal at the 8:56 mark of the frame as Millins put one past the netminder. Brooke McArdle ’22 and Brianna Haviland ’22 would be credited with the assists for EC.

The Cardinals would get a late power-play opportunity in the second and would capitalize at the 19:35 mark to knot the score 2-2. Ivy Boric would be credited with the goal on the power-play for Plattsburgh.

Elmira brought some early momentum in the third period as the Purple & Gold looked to take another advantage. Morgan Mordini ’22 looked to have the answer for EC in the frame but her wrist shot would ring off the post to keep the score even 2-2. Plattsburgh thought that it had taken a 3-2 lead midway through the frame before having its goal waived off due to goaltender interference.

Plattsburgh netted the eventual game-winning goal at the 14:54 mark of the third period as Annie Katonka took a drop pass and would use a screen to wrist a shot into the back of the net to make it 3-2.

Leonie-Louise Kuehberger ’25 would be pulled for an extra skater for the second consecutive contest for Elmira but finished the contest with 30 saves in net for the Purple & Gold. Elmira concludes the season with a 25-4-1 overall record as the 25 wins matches the second-most for a single season in program history.
