Usually, players sign a two-way deal offered by an NHL club, but at the end of July, Nylander had yet to find a new team, so he was signed to the Marlies and wouldn’t skate with the Toronto Maple Leafs unless they offered him a contract.
Alex is the younger brother of Maple Leafs star William, a multiple-time 40-goal scorer.
Unlike his All-Star brother, Alex has bounced around the league, playing with the Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks, Penguins, and, most recently, the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In 121 games, he’s scored 25 goals and 49 points. Alex split time with Pittsburgh and Columbus last season, scoring 11 goals in 23 games with the Blue Jackets.
The Penguins traded Nylander in February 2024 with a sixth-round pick in exchange for Emil Bemström.
As the 26-year-old returns to the AHL, he’s a minor league veteran with 330 games of experience, 94 goals, and 210 points.
