The Vegas Golden Knights finished with a perfect 3-0-0 record at the 2024 NHL Rookie Faceoff win a 5-3 win over Utah HC.
Strong performances in goal by both Carl Lindbom and Jesper Vikman propelled the Golden Knights throughout the tournament. Mathieu Cataford, Ben Hemmerling and Bear Hughes showed up and performed against Utah and were the catalysts in the game.
Cataford opened the scoring for the Golden Knights in the first period with a deflection on Viliam Kmec’s shot. Hemmerling added another just over two minutes later with a tip in front off of a Joe Fleming shot. Hughes potted a third goal in the first period with a shot from the left circle.
The second period didn’t favour the Golden Knights as much as the first period did. Cole Beaudoin scored just 45 seconds into the second period to cut the Golden Knights lead to two. Later on the power play, 2022 first-round pick Maveric Lamoureux scored Utah’s second goal of the period to bring them within one.
Kyle Crnkovic tied the game at 3-3 early in the third period. Julian Lutz picked up his third assist and Lamoureux picked up his third point on Crnkovic’s goal. Hughes notched his second goal of the game on a scramble in front to give the Golden Knights the lead once again. Braeden Bowman scored his third of the tournament into the empty net to secure the win and the perfect record for the Golden Knights.
The Golden Knights prospects will now travel from the Toyota Sports Performance Center in El Segundo, California to Vegas to begin training camp. The valuable experience these prospects picked up will hopefully translate to their play in preseason.
