Without question, as the Stanley Cup Final shifts back to Edmonton for Game 6 on Friday night, all the pressure is now firmly on the Florida Panthers.
It was another jaw dropping night for Connor McDavid, who at this point seems like a lock to win the Conn Smythe Trophy —win or loss. For the record, only five players in NHL history have captured the dubious honour despite falling in defeat. Jean-Sebastian Giguere (2003) was the last to pull it off 21 years ago.
Yes, McDavid’s been that good.
At any rate, that’s where we kicked off the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Against all odds, the Oilers have won back-to-back contests after dropping the first three games of the series to at least make things interesting. If this keeps up, the 1942 Leafs may soon have company.
Presented by Greta Bar YYZ, we led off with a Jake Guentzel discussion. On Tuesday, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli turned some heads when he said that if the Leafs do end up trading Mitch Marner, they “could be players” for the two-time 40 goal scorer in free agency. On paper, Guentzel makes a lot of sense, but at this point, it feels more like a pipe dream. It was still fun to discuss, though.
After that, brought to you by Wendy’s, long-time NHL head coach Jacques Martin dropped by for a chat. We talked about playoff players, Mitch Marner, Craig Berube, and why the Leafs have been unable to score in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Obviously, Martin brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to the conversation. It was a lot of fun!
Lastly, to wrap, we touched on Barclay Goodrow, who was placed on waivers by the New York Rangers on Tuesday. Furthermore, he’s expected to be bought out over the next couple of weeks. With that in mind, we broke down a potential fit with the Maple Leafs. Goodrow, who’s extremely versatile, could prove to be an excellent free agent value buy – for any team – this summer. He’s from Aurora.
