MIAC Athletes of the Week – March 1, 2021

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for basketball, hockey, indoor track and field, and swimming and diving on Monday. Student-athletes from Bethel, Gustavus, St. Catherine, and Saint John’s claimed the conference’s weekly honors for February 22-28, 2021.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the conference’s sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the winter season, Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week
Isaiah Carver-Bagley
Bethel University

Isaiah Carver-Bagley averaged 19.5 points per game to lead Bethel to a 2-0 week. The senior forward poured in a game-high 17 points against Concordia on Feb. 22 before leading the Royals with 22 points in an upset win at No. 5 Saint John’s on Feb. 27. Going 8-for-14 from the field, Carver-Bagley helped the Royals leave Collegeville with a win for the first time since 2009.

MIAC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week
Bella Williams
Bethel University

Zimmerman, Minn.

Bella Williams propelled Bethel to a pair of MIAC victories with a fantastic defensive effort last week. With 11 takeaways on Feb. 27 against Saint Benedict, Williams tied the Royals’ single-game program record. That total also ties a single-game record for steals in a MIAC game, last achieved by Katie Jensen of Hamline on February 22, 1999. With 225 career steals, Williams moved into third all-time within the BU program. The senior guard also chipped in a career-high 10 assists against the Auggies on Feb. 24.


MIAC Men’s Hockey Athlete of the Week
Auggie Moore

Auggie Moore recorded four points with two goals and two assists to help Saint John’s to a 1-0-1 record last week. The sophomore forward collected three points with a game-winning goal and a pair of assists in Thursday’s 4-2 victory over Augsburg. Moore then scored a power-play goal in Friday’s 2-2 tie at St. Thomas. Moore has eight points over his last four games and 36 in 32 career contests.

MIAC Women’s Hockey Athlete of the Week
Molly McHugh
Gustavus Adolphus College

Minnetonka, Minn.

Molly McHugh tallied two goals and an assist to help Gustavus to a pair of MIAC victories last week. The sophomore forward notched one goal in the Gusties’ 3-2 victory at Augsburg on Feb. 25 and came back two days later to score one goal and assist on another in a 3-2 win versus Hamline on Feb. 27.


MIAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Taylor Rooney
Gustavus Adolphus College

Andover, Minn.

Taylor Rooney placed first in both of his events this past Friday at St. Thomas. The senior won the 60 hurdles in 7.90 and the 200 meters in 22.42. He continues to rank first in NCAA Division III in the 60 hurdles and now ranks first in the MIAC and 12th in the country in the 200-meter.

MIAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week

Gabe Irons broke the Bethel program record in the weight throw on three of his four throws Saturday afternoon in a dual meet with Hamline. Irons had a phenomenal series of tosses, culminating in his final throw of 18.35 meters (60’2.5″), breaking the previous record by a full meter. He is currently ranked second in NCAA Division III in the weight throw.

MIAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week

Birgen Nelson set two Gustavus program records on Friday in a dual against St. Thomas. Nelson won the 60 hurdles with a school-record time of 8.76, which ranks first in NCAA Division III this season. The sophomore’s winning time of 25.51 in the 200-meter also set a school record, while ranking first in the MIAC and second in Division III. Nelson placed second in the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:10.06 as well, which ranks third in the MIAC.

MIAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Madi Kes

Madi Kes won both the triple jump and long jump on Friday in Gustavus’ meet at St. Thomas. The first-year’s triple jump of 11.69 meters ranks first in the MIAC, third in NCAA Division III, and set a school record. Kes’ mark of 5.10 meters in the long jump ranks fourth in the conference.


MIAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week

Sauk Rapids, Minn.

Jack Grabinski won both the 1- and 3-meter dive competitions in Saint John’s diving invitational matchup with Gustavus, Hamline, and St. Thomas on Feb. 27. The sophomore scored 475.70 to win the 1-meter event and 492.50 to claim victory off the 3-meter board.

MIAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week
Annie Voss
St. Catherine University

Mequon, Wis. | Divine Savior Holy Angels

Annie Voss claimed personal best times in St. Catherine’s home meet with Augsburg and Concordia on Feb. 26. Voss placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.00. She also helped the Wildcats’ 400-yard medley relay team to victory in 4:00.49.
