MIAC Women’s Hockey Notebook – January 31, 2022

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) women’s hockey teams will be busy this week with 12 games scheduled over the next five days.

POLL TALK
Gustavus stayed put at No. 6 in the latest USCHO.com Division III Top 10 Poll, released on January 31.

Gustavus ranks fifth in Division III in the most recent PairWise rankings. Augsburg is No. 21 and Saint Mary’s is No. 25.


NATIONAL NOTABLES
Augsburg first-year forward Emily Cronkhite (Eagan, Minn.) has two short-handed goals this season, tied for fifth-most in NCAA Division III.

Augsburg sophomore forward Kensie Malone (Minneapolis, Minn. | Gentry Academy) has three short-handed goals this season, tied for third-most in NCAA Division III.

Concordia sophomore forward Jerica Friese (Argusville, N.D. | Fargo Shanley) is averaging 0.80 goals per game this season, tied for tenth-most in D-III. She has seven power-play goals this season, fourth-most in NCAA Division III.

Gustavus junior forward Hailey Holland (Aberdeen, S.D.) is tied for ninth in NCAA Division III this season with an average of 1.00 assists per game.

Gustavus junior forward Molly McHugh (Minnetonka, Minn.) is tied for ninth in Division III with 199 faceoffs won this season.

Gustavus sophomore forward Brooke Power (Lakeville, Minn. | North) has five power-play goals this season, tied for sixth-most in D-III.

Gustavus junior goaltender Katie McCoy (Grafton, Wis. | Cedarburg) has a goals-against average of 1.158 this season, ninth-best in Division III this season. She leads all divisions of women’s college hockey with seven shutouts this season.

Hamline junior defender Hannah Dorsey (Fargo, N.D. | North) had four assists against Bethel on 1/28, tied for the fourth-most in any Division III game this season.

St. Olaf junior forward Annika Patterson (Hopkins, Minn.) had two short-handed goals against Concordia on 11/20, becoming one of just two players in NCAA Division III with multiple short-handed goals in a single game this season.


AROUND THE MIAC
Augsburg junior forward Jenna Gerold (Farmington, Minn.) had a two-goal, one-assist weekend for the Auggies in a sweep of St. Olaf. Gerold scored a third-period unassisted goal on an end-to-end break in a 6-2 home win on 1/28, then tipped home a goal in the second period and assisted on another goal in the third period in a 4-0 road win the following day.

Bethel senior forward Lexi DeBace (Little Canada, Minn. | Roseville Area) assisted on the Royals’ first score of the game and connected on the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Hamline on 1/29. It was her second multi-point game of the season and first since a one-goal, one-assist effort against Northland on 10/30/2021.

Concordia sophomore forward Jerica Friese (Argusville, N.D. | Fargo Shanley) enjoyed a three-point weekend with two goals and an assist in the Cobbers’ road series with St. Scholastica. Friese had a goal and an assist in a 4-2 loss on 1/28 along with a goal in another 4-2 defeat on 1/29. Friese has scored a goal in six consecutive games.

Gustavus junior forward Hailey Holland (Aberdeen, S.D.) had a five-point week as the Gusties went 2-0-1 overall. Holland had an assist in the 1/25 win over Bethel and then posted four points in a 5-0 win over Saint Mary’s on 1/29. She scored two goals and assisted on two others. Holland finished the three games with a +3 rating.

Hamline sophomore forward Sydney Lemke (Monticello, Minn.) scored two goals – including the game-winner – in a 7-0 rout of Bethel on 1/28. The goals were her first since 11/20/2021 at St. Catherine.

Saint Benedict first-year defender Jenna Timm (Maple Grove, Minn.) helped the Bennies to a 3-0 week last week – the team’s first three-game win streak since the 2014-15 season. She assisted on the game-winning goal against Hamline in a nonconference game on 1/26, scored two goals – including the game-winner – against St. Catherine on 1/28, and assisted on the game-winning goal on the power play to wrap up the season sweep of the Wildcats on 1/29. Timm finished the week with two goals and three assists to move into the team lead with 13 points on eight total assists and five goals this season.

St. Catherine senior forward Sophia Gorski (Lakeville, Minn. | North) scored three of the team’s six goals in the Wildcats’ series against Saint Benedict over the weekend. Gorski scored once in a 4-3 road loss on 1/28 and tallied a pair of goals in a 4-3 loss at home on 1/29. She has scored four goals in five games in 2022.

Saint Mary’s senior goaltender Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) stopped a career-high 55 of the 56 shots she faced in a 1-1 tie with Gustavus on 1/28 before adding a 34-save effort in SMU’s 5-0 loss to the Gusties the following afternoon. Ziakas also stopped all three of Gustavus’ attempts in the post-overtime shootout to help the Cardinals take an extra point in the conference standings. Her 55 saves are the most by an SMU goaltender since Ashley Corcoran stopped 56 against Hamline on 2/3/2017.

St. Olaf first-year forward Heather Sager (Blaine, Minn.) scored a goal in the Oles’ 6-2 loss to Augsburg on 1/28. Sager scored on her lone shot of the game for her third goal of the season and first since 11/19/2021 at Concordia.

St. Scholastica senior forward Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn.) registered a goal and an assist in both victories of the Saints’ two-game sweep of Concordia last weekend. Her goal on 1/28 midway through the third period proved to be the game-winner. Thompson then assisted on the game-winner the following afternoon.
