Mortiz Seider has become the sixth Detroit Red Wings player to win the Calder Trophy, becoming the first to do so since Roger Crozier in 1965 after an incredible debut season.
Seider, a 21-year-old defender, posted 50 points in 82 games with the Wings for one of the best rookie seasons from a defenseman over the past decade. He immediately became a top-pairing blueline for the Wings, averaging over 23 minutes a night and playing all situations for the club.
Seider was drafted sixth overall by the Red Wings in 2019, a surprising pick at the time due to his lack of ice time in the top German league. Since then, he has become one of the best blueliners in the game, one many believe will be challenging for Norris Trophies before long.
Toronto’s Michael Bunting and Anaheim’s Trevor Zegras finished as runner-ups for the award.
