In a game that saw a double-overtime goalie swap and one team recording over 80 shots, the Pittsburgh Penguins managed to win a triple-overtime meeting to open up the series against the New York Rangers.
Adam Fox opened the scoring at 9:19, but the two teams swapped goals to eventually make it 3-3. Bryan Rust’s goal at 38:30 was the last goal of regulation.
Evgeni Malkin tipped in a point shot from John Marino at 5:58 in the third overtime, Pittsburgh’s 83rd shot of the game. The Rangers took 68 in a losing effort.
Pittsburgh had to play without its starting goalie, Tristan Jarry, who has been out with an injury since mid-April. Casey DeSmith, playing well in the Penguins net, was forced to leave the game with cramping issues in the second overtime, with Louis Domingue taking over to finish the game. Domingue played just two games this season with Pittsburgh and has never started a playoff game.
The real star of the show, though, was Igor Shesterkin, who set a Rangers-team high of 70 saves after five periods. Gump Worsley previously held the record with 56 saves in an overtime loss in 1962 vs. Toronto, a 3-2 overtime loss.
