Former Abbotsford Canucks and Syracuse Crunch defenseman Quinn Schmiemann has signed a one-year deal with HK Dukla Trencin in Slovakia, the team announced Wednesday.
A product of Wilcox, Sask., Schmiemann split time between the Canucks and Crunch this past season. In 25 games with Abbotsford, he scored one goal and five assists for six points. With Syracuse, Schmiemann had two points in 11 regular season games.
Drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft, Schmiemann never signed with the organization. Since turning pro in 2022-23, he has seen 67 AHL regular season games and also spent time in the ECHL with the Kalamazoo Wings.
With Schmiemann heading overseas for the first time, he will have the opportunity to see consistent ice time with HK Dukla Trencin. Although he hasn’t been able to find consistent offensive production at the pro level, Schmiemann had success in the WHL and could position himself into an AHL contract next year if all goes well.
