Soaring Eagles Fall to Statesmen inside The Cooler on Saturday Afternoon

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Elmira College men’s ice hockey team dropped its Saturday afternoon matchup against the No. 1 ranked Statesmen from Hobart College, 5-0. In its 99th matchup all-time amongst the programs, the Statesmen would get the best in a contest which featured 17 penalties for a combined total of 45 penalty minutes. 

For the contest, the Soaring Eagles would finish 0-of-3 on the power-play, while Hobart finished 1-of-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Statesmen would get the scoring started at the 11 minute mark in the first period after Tanner Hartman found the back of the net past Elmira netminder Kyle Curtin ’26. The goal was assisted by Ignat Belov. With under seven seconds remaining in the opening period, it would be Hobart who would extend its lead on a power-play opportunity, the lone advantage goal of the evening for both sides, as Luke Aquaro scored on assists from Shane Shell and Jonah Alexander following a cross-checking penalty for the Soaring Eagles. 
  • In the second, the Statesmen would see a trio of goals off the sticks of Jonah Alexander, Shane Shell, and Christian Duvall, extending its lead to 5-0 which would conclude the scoring for the evening. 
  • Between the pipes, Curtin would be dealt with the loss after allowing four goals in 32:28 of ice time. He finished with 23 saves. Jeffrey Zero ’23 would allow one goal over the final 27:32 of play, where he made 20 saves. 
  • Hobart would control the faceoff battle, going 50-of-63, for a 79.3% success rate, while the Statesmen defense allowed just 15 shots on goal for the game.
  • Nicholas Domtrovic ’24 would lead the Soaring Eagles with three shots, while Matt York ’26, Joel Pavey ’25, and Shawn Kennedy ’24 each posted a pair. 

UP NEXT:
The Soaring Eagles will return to the ice next Friday when heading to UMass Boston to take on the Beacons in another NEHC matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
