The Dallas Stars are keeping the architect of their roster around for at least one extra season.
With training camp creeping closer and closer on the horizon, the Stars opted to take care of some important internal business on Tuesday morning, agreeing to terms with GM Jim Nill on a one-year contract extension.
Nill, who was entering the final year of his current contract, is now tied to Dallas through the 2023-24 season, which will serve as his 11th year as Stars GM.
“Jim has done tremendous work in his nine years since joining the Stars, having developed a culture of excellence within our organization that has translated to success on the ice,” Stars owner and governor Tom Gaglardi said in a statement on Tuesday.
“He’s re-shaped our club to put us in a position to compete with the League’s best each and every season. Jim’s diligence and commitment to the Stars has reverberated throughout our entire organization and we’re excited for him to continue his work building a championship-caliber team.”
Since taking over the GM post in 2013, Nill has led the Stars to a 356-259-84 record in nine seasons, appearing in the playoffs on five occasions, advancing past the first round three times, and even earning a birth in the Stanley Cup final during the 2020 NHL Postseason Bubble before ultimately losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
“I want to thank Tom Gaglardi for his commitment to building a winning organization and for allowing Bekki and myself to call Texas home over the past ten years,” said Nill in a statement following the announcement.
“While we have made some big strides toward our ultimate goal, I am eager to continue my work in developing a winning culture that ultimately brings this team and this city a championship.”
With star forward Jason Robertson still unsigned heading into next season, Nill still has plenty of work to do before the year kicks off.
