Another night, another frustrating loss for the Maple Leafs.
It’s Groundhog Day.
After grabbing an early 2-0 lead, Toronto surrendered four unanswered goals to drop Round 3 of the Battle of Ontario 4-2 against the rival Ottawa Senators. Joonas Korpisalo was great, Drake Batherson scored two big goals, and simply put, the Senators were the most desperate team on the night.
Anthony Stewart filled in for Jay Rosehill on the Thursday Edition of Leafs Morning Take. First and foremost, we talked about the World Juniors for a few minutes. Of course, Stu played in two of those himself. In case you missed it, Fraser Minten is dawning the “C” for Canada. Easton Cowan’s also on the team. It’s always great to see some blue and white representation on the national stage.
Presented by Door Dash, The Appetizer focused on the meat and potatoes as to what happened on Wednesday night at Scotiabank Arena. As we’ve seen time and time again from this squad, the team took the foot off the gas and let the Senators back in the game. Simply put, they got what they deserved.
Meantime, thanks to Charm Diamond Centres, we dove headfirst into the goalie conversation. Martin Jones has been fine, but ultimately, can he be a solution come playoff time? Probably not. Ilya Samsonov’s confidence is shot —is it unrealistic to suggest that he somehow finds it again? Then, you have Joseph Woll, who’s currently out indefinitely with a high ankle sprain. It’s definitely a fair conversation, and we did our best to come through it.
Jay Rosehill will be back in the mix for the Friday edition of Leafs Morning Take. We’ll recap the back-to-back this weekend as the Toronto visits Columbus (yet again) and then hosts Michael Bunting and the Carolina Hurricanes.
