SUNDAY’S GAME: Alex DeBrincat posts hat trick as Detroit Red Wings douse Flames, 6-2, for 5th straight W
Game notes: When you’re on a hot streak, enjoy it. At least that’s what Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde told the media recently, even if it’s not sustainable.
It has been a dream start for the Red Wings, topped off with a four-point weekend during a back-to-back that included a road trip Saturday to face the Ottawa Senators that resulted in a 5-2 win. The Wings showed no signs of tiring when they returned home for a Sunday afternoon game with the Calgary Flames, winning 6-2 with new signing Alex DeBrincat adding a hat trick.
One of, if not the most encouraging signs thus far has been the play of DeBrincat and his linemate and captain, Dylan Larkin. The two have combined for 23 points and 11 goals in the first six games and already seemingly have a great feel for where each other is at all times. Larkin’s pass-first, creation style has beautifully complimented DeBrincat’s sweet touch and killer shot and has helped everyone on the team fall into their proper roles.
The two have also proven to be a formidable duo on the power play. The WIngs have scored on 39.1% of their extra-man opportunities, which ranks second in the NHL and has helped them lead the league with five goals per game.
After making the playoffs last season, the Kraken have gotten off to a disappointing start. Goaltender Phillip Grubauer has posted an 0-4 record and the team isn’t giving him much help, scoring 1.83 goals per game, which ranks 30th out of 32 teams.
If the Wings continue to play well, Tuesday should be a good opportunity for them to pick up another win against a visiting West Coast team.
