Ottawa Senators left wing Tyler Motte (14) scores on Detroit Red Wings goaltender Ville Husso (35) in the third period Dec. 17, 2022, in Detroit.

Game notes: The Red Wings have fallen behind early in each of their past three games, giving up a goal in the first 90 seconds to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 21, four goals in the first 19:27 to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday and five goals in the first 34:02 to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. We’d suggest scoring first might be a pleasant change, but, hey, the Wings are 2-1-0 in those games, so whatever works, eh? (Then again, the Wings are 7-9-1 this season when giving up the first goal and 8-3-6 when scoring first, so an early goal would probably be in their best interests — if only for the mental health of coach Derek Lalonde.)

The Senators were ready to complete for the playoffs — gee, where have we heard that before? — and went all-in-ish on an offseason trade for Farmington Hills native Alex DeBrincat. What he lacks in size — he’s listed at 5 feet 7 and 165 pounds — he makes up for in goal scoring ability. He had 41 scores last season with Chicago and, after a slow start with the Sens, appears to be heating up, with four goals in his past three games. That includes two scores on Thursday night in Washington; he scored the tying goal with 5:34 remaining against the Caps, then the winner 91 seconds into overtime. He didn’t pick up a goal in the Sens’ previous visit to LCA — a 6-3 victory on Dec. 17 — but he did have three assists.

That game had another Michigan native scoring, however: Tyler Motte, a St. Clair native and Michigan alumnus, picked up his third goal of the season while killing off a Wings power play. It was his first goal against the Wings in eight games against the franchise.

After the squads drop the ball, er, the puck on the new year Saturday night, the Wings will have a few days off before hosting the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night in a nationally televised game. The Senators, meanwhile, will zip back home for a Sunday night game against the Sabres.
