The Vancouver Canucks added some defensive depth to their roster, acquiring left-shot defenceman Erik Brannstrom from the Colorado Avalanche. In return, the Canucks send defenceman Tucker Poolman (20% salary retained) and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft to the Avalanche. Poolman has not played since 2022-23 and will not play this season.

Initially drafted 15th overall by the Vegas Golden Knights, Brannstrom has played 266 NHL games over the six seven seasons. He spent last season with the Ottawa Senators, averaging 16:35 of ice time while recording 17 points over 76 games. Brannstrom was signed as a free agent by Colorado on July 2 to a one-year deal worth $900,000.

Known as an offensive defenceman, Brannstrom does have experience playing with Elias Pettersson. The two have represented Sweden at multiple junior tournaments, including in 2018, when they won a Silver medal together. Now 25, Brannstrom has won three Silver Medals for Sweden during his career and was named to the World Juniors All-Star team in 2019.

Shortly after being acquired, Brannstrom was placed on waivers to be assigned to the Abbotsford Canucks. The trade was made to clear up cap space, opening up over $1 million before the start of the season. If cleared, Brannstrom will join a deep blue line in Abbotsford that features names such as Jett Woo, Cole McWard, Akito Hirose, and the other Elias Pettersson.
